Brilliant!

Yesterday I ranted and today I will rave. Last night Mike and I watched a special on the most amazing young man: Stephen Wiltshire. Stephen is a brilliant artist who happens to be autistic; when I say brilliant artist I mean brilliant.

I haven't been able to stop thinking about Stephen's art all day; while out for lunch with Mike I was thinking again about the phenomenal talent Stephen has for drawing from memory (he has been referred to as a human camera) when Mike blurted out: I can't stop thinking about that artist. My point is, this young man is worthy of awe... maybe you have heard of him over the years but Mike and I hadn't.

We have every intention of purchasing a copy of one of Stephen's prints down the road and had no trouble agreeing on the panorama of England which the filming of the documentary circled around.


Grab yourself a glass of vino and be prepared to let your jaw drop. The video is 40 minutes but well worth the time. I think it would be impossible for you to watch this and not be impressed. Let me know what you think!

It'll Make You Giggle

I labeled it 'movies' but technically WEEDS is a TV show. If you haven't seen it you should, it's really funny. I'm not a big comedy girl, I love to laugh but sitcoms and movies rarely do it for me. Maybe it's our warped sense of humor but Mike and I are hooked on Weeds - not the stuff you smoke, the show. A suburban mom turns to dealing to support her two boys, I'll say no more. We're into the second season right now and loving it. Have you seen it? What do you think?

Halloween Hangover

I ate far too many of the little chocolate bars meant for the goblins last night. I have a chocolate hangover. blech.

Of course nephews and niece were definitely the cutest trick or treaters stomping around town.

Jess and I watched The Exorcist as planned last night. I arrived home at 130 am totally freaked out and planned to sit in the living room until Mike got home; that was until I checked my mail and realized Lola had sold. Her new home is in Savannah, Georgia! Thanks to the sale I was distracted and got over being creeped out.

Mike and I had planned to attend a Halloween party as zombies tonight, unfortunately Mike is really turning into one so we can no longer attend. He found out yesterday that what we thought were some nasty bug bites are actually shingles! Ick and ouch. Thankfully I've had the chicken pox; unfortunately we can't be sure everyone else has so we're skipping the bash.

This is my favourite film

I knew someone would eventually choose the topic of favourite film for the "This is..." meme and the day has come. "What's your favourite film?" is one of my lease favourite questions because I don't have a simple answer. I have watched what seems like a million movies in my lifetime and I can't seem to choose a favourite.

Since Hokey has taken the time to pick the topic for the week I'm going to try my best to narrow down my list of loved flicks.

Fav Musical
This one is easy. Some of you may remember my post about the best movie musical ever: Across the Universe. It is by far the best when it comes to musicals. No point in arguing with me because I'm right and anyone who disagrees is wrong with a capital W. If you haven't seen it be sure to rent it and be prepared to fall madly in love with Jim Sturgess.

Hot hot hot!

The story is good, the soundtrack is phenomenal (Beatles all through but sounding better than the originals thanks to these amazing performers) and well, Jim Sturgess.

Horror
I LOVE scary movies. I've loved them since I was a kid. More often than not my evenings filled with scary movies would be followed up by even scarier nightmares. My parents were saints, they would always come in and comfort the maniac child although I'm certain there were many times when they were tempted to smother me with my pillow considering the nightmares were self-inflicted. The nightmares were awful but they were the result of something wonderful: horror flicks.

Choosing one favourite horror movie is not easy so I've narrowed it down to two:

The Exorcist

Poltergeist
I loved the Poltergeist movies when I was a kid, they freaked me out like you wouldn't believe and the clown with the moving head at the end of either the 2nd or 3rd movie caused me to rip the hanging clown on a swing from my bedroom ceiling and worsened my already evident clown issues.

Comedies
Old School is in my top ten for sure



And of course the classic: Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Makes Me Melt

I'm not a real celebrity loving sort of girl, Johnny Depp is the exception, but after watching the most amazing flick EVER last night I have fallen in lust with the sexy creature seen above: Jim Sturgess. Yum in so many ways - those eyes, the voice that sounds like honey, the accent and that smile. I'm smitten.


If you haven't seen Across the Universe you really need to. Julie Taymor is the most fabulously creative woman: the storyline is excellent, the choreography, sets, costumes... it's all jaw dropping. The cast is refreshing, the main characters are all (formerly) unknowns with voices that are out of this world. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but hearing their songs sung by new voices forced me to listen to the lyrics, I certainly have a new appreciation for their music.

I've mentioned before that musicals on the big screen are not really my thing but this one is like nothing I've ever seen. Rent it and let me know if you agree. This video clip will give you a taste of the visual elements included in the film, simply amazing!

Dad & the Demon Barber

I ventured out with my dad on monday for dinner & a movie: a terribly late as in 2 years late father's day gift. Yes I'm crazy busy but really that's brutal - 2 years late?! bad bad daughter. Unfortunately we didn't have much dad & daughter time in 2007; it was such a ridiculously busy year and usually one of the other mutually adored ladies in our lives mom or my niece Neve was with us when I did find time to visit. I'm not suggesting that this is a bad thing, because I love every moment I have with my fab fam, but hanging out with dad on monday reminded me of how much I enjoy spending quality time with him. Our plan is to spend some more time hanging out this year: dinner and movie nights every other month. The bonus is that dad is willing to watch just about any movie out there so he's a great date!


We saw Sweeny Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Oh Johnny Johnny. I've had a thing for him since his 21 Jump Street days yes I know, me and 8 billion other females and don't miss an opportunity to gaze at him. I remember tacking a poster of him to my ceiling when I was a kid so that his face was the last thing I saw before I went to bed - my first celebrity crush.

Besides the obvious fact that he's a seriously sexy man, he's one of the best actors alive and chooses great films to show off his skills. Johnny Depp & Tim Burton are the most perfectly matched duo. Weird meets weirder = perfect weirdness. Burton must be one twisted man, his movies always amaze me, to crawl into his bean for even just one hour would be quite the experience.

I wasn't too sure about Sweeny Todd, the fact that it's based on a broadway musical made me a bit nervous: musicals are meant to be seen live, not on a screen. The first twenty minutes were a bit painful but I was pleasantly surprised with the remainder of the film. It wasn't the best movie but worth checking out. Depp and Helena Carter sounded fabulous together; who woulda thunk Depp could sing? Yum.

Time flies

I haven't posted since Thursday because I've been crazy busy. Happily it has been 'fun busy' & not 'school/work busy'. Here's a quick (ha -- that's unlikely) update on the life of Jaime.

The powder room is complete! It's hard to snap pics in such a tiny space so here's one to give you an idea of what the colour turned out to be. Jessy described the colour perfectly when she poked her head in thursday night: "it's like a raspberry". Yes! That's it, our bathroom is like sitting inside of a giant raspberry and I absolutely adore it. Raspberries happen to be one of my very favorite berries and they are pretty to look at too so if you have a screaming desire to know what it would be like to sit yourself inside of one of these fabulous berries you can park yourself in our powder room and get a taste. No pun intended. We need to add some bits to the walls to give your eyes something else to stare at besides the blaring red walls but I'm waiting to find that perfect something to complete our little room.

Thursday evening was fun! I went to the outdoor movie night at Waterloo park with some friends (mom included). I can't believe we waited until the last movie of the summer to hit this event--next year I want to try to hit all of the shows. It was like being at the drive-in but without the noise of engines starting sporadically to ensure cars are going to start at the end of the show.

We watched Casablanca while sitting in our lawn chairs curled up in blankets with a pile of other people. I should clarify, we weren't curled up with other people, there were lots of other people there watching the movie with us.

What a fabulous movie! So many of those classic lines I've heard a million times and said myself: "Play it again Sam", "Here's looking at you kid", "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" - I had no idea they came from that movie. What a great flick! It's made me want to start watching old movies.

Mike was stunned to learn that I'd never seen
Breakfast at Tiffany's. He thinks every girl has
seen the movie! I'm a freak in my husband's eyes. Well I was but no longer am (at least I'm no longer a freak for not having seen Breakfast at Tiffany's but no doubt he thinks I'm a freak for other reasons most days) because Jessy & I watched it on Saturday night! Loved it! I can't believe I have never seen the movie before. Audrey Hepburn is too cute for words and I loved her as Holly Golightly! Such a flighty bird, can't help but love her.

Jess & I got a kick out of the gear being worn in the flick. We spent Saturday shopping and so many of the clothes in the movie have crept back into style today!

Saturday was a superb day overall. Found a new movie to add to my list of favs and a new store as well! H&M opened in Cambridge on friday and the clothes are sweet! Cheap but cute. Bought a pile of new things for work and play--hello 2007 (welcome back 1985).

Friday was fabulous as well! Visited the Children's Museum downtown with my parents and my niece. Neve is hilarious and giggled her little bean off when we played with the giant plastic pin thingo (you push your hand, head, body, whateva against the pins and the outline can be seen on the opposite side of the wall). Eventually she braved the pins herself and thought that her own outline was absolutely hilarious. too funny. kid giggles... what could be better? wish we had brought a camera to the museum, oh well, next time.

Dinner at Shannon & Paul's in Burlington on Friday evening. Yum! Amazing dessert and yummy salad! I love seeing those girls and boys. Good times and lotsa laughs! and Shannon's little people are too freaking cute. Can't wait for Lisa's wedding next month. Seeing Shannon, Amber and Lisa twice in a month?! Lucky me!

This has turned into a novel so I'm going to sign off for now. Heading to, well I'm not actually sure where it is, Tina's cottage tomorrow morning with Jess & Colin for a few days. Sadly Mike has to work so he'll be on his own for a few days. I'll miss you baby! Be back on Wednesday with an update on the trouble caused at Tina's cottage!
